Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Non-destructive volumetric inspection using high-frequency sound waves.
What It Measures
Ultrasonic testing sends high-frequency sound pulses (typically 1–10 MHz) through the material and listens for reflections from internal features. It detects subsurface flaws — voids, porosity, inclusions, delamination, and cracks — that are invisible to the naked eye. For thick aluminium plate, UT is essential to verify internal soundness before machining.
Why It Matters
A plate can look perfect on the surface and contain internal voids or inclusions that cause catastrophic failure under load. UT is the only practical way to inspect thick-section material for internal defects before committing it to expensive CNC machining. Discovering a flaw after 20 hours of machining is far more costly than a 15-minute UT scan upfront.
Standard Followed
ASTM E114 / IS 13805
Equipment Used
Contact or immersion ultrasonic flaw detector with appropriate probes for the material thickness and geometry.
When You Need It
- Thick-section plates (>25mm) for structural applications
- Aerospace and defense components
- Material from unknown or untrusted suppliers
- Any critical application where internal defects are unacceptable
- Weld quality verification
